You can have a lot of fun with your phone: surfing the net, downloading games, recording all of those precious memories with your camera. Let’s not forget that your phone can also be a powerful parenting and educational tool! In that spirit, here’s a list of ten of the top apps designed to educate and entertain your children.

1. Star Walk

This is an award winning education app that educates children (and adults, if they wish) about the solar system and astronomy. It is beautifully designed and has amazing reviews from right across the board. Children will love this app because it means they’re learning about science – but in a visual and exciting way, which usually means their attention spans will last a little longer too. So it’s great all round.

2. GEO Walk HD

This hugely popular “factoid” app is something that can keep children entertained for hours. The app is full of amazing facts and stories from all over the world (handily mapped out on a globe) and is even accompanied with breath taking photography and video footage. Children will discover things they never knew even existed, and be able to place the information globally too.

3. Dress Up Princess Math

This app is perfect for encouraging your daughter to enjoy practising math. The game lets you unlock more outfits for the Princess, the more correct answers you give. The game has fantastic reviews which are all extremely encouraging, and once a level is completed the child even gets a “free play”. Perfect for entertaining and educating.

4. Europe Puzzle Map

This app is wonderful for encouraging the older children to improve their geography skills. Because of its puzzle concept it feels more like a game than like homework – and once the children are experts on Europe you can download other parts of the world too (Such as Japan and the USA) – So it’s a fantastic long term option.

5. Old Macdonald HD

If you remember this nursery rhyme from your childhood, then just think the fun you children will have with this interactive version of the song. It’s the perfect education app for younger children as it takes them on a virtual tour around the farm and introduces them to all the different kinds of animals. The art style is stunning and the sing-a-long scenes are just adorable – so you’ll love it and so will the young children.

6. Weird But True

This app is exactly as it sounds. Full of weird (but true) facts to entertain and educate the kids – this will keep them busy for hours. It was voted New York Times: “Best app for keeping kids happy” and was voted a “Staff Favourite” by Apple. If that’s not enough to convince you though, the graphics and designs used are brilliant, modern and sleek. The kids won’t even feel like they’re learning!

7. BrianPOP

BrainPOP is the ultimate education resource for kids. It covers a wealth of topics in science, maths and English and offers user friendly layouts and designs. You can choose to simply read through the information, or you can test yourself with a pop quiz, it’s up to you! It’s a little more expensive than the other apps featured on this site – but worth every penny as new information, new videos and new facts are added every month.

8. Math Bingo

There usually nothing better for children than combining something educational with something fun or challenging like a game or contest. This app has harnessed that idea perfectly by creating Math Bingo. The app encourages kids to see maths as something other than the “boring” school subject we all hated – and instead as something worth spending time on. It has been recommended by Disney Family fun magazine, The New York Times and Apple – so they must be doing something right!

9. Fruit Ninja

Fruit Ninja – although not strictly educational is a great entertaining app that will wake your kids up. If a child is revising for a test or an exam this is a great fast-paced game to play for a few minutes to really wake the brain up and get the children’s reflexes going. They’ll love you for downloading something so cool, too.

10. Connext

Another brain-awakener as our last suggestion. The game requires players to connect dots to produce the biggest possible loops. This game will entertain your children for hours and really start making them think strategically and sensibly. It’s not so fast paced as Fruit Ninja, but it will get their brains warmed up, get them thinking and get them on their toes.
