Everybody knows at least something about the Golden Retriever. It’s such a popular dog that it’s impossible to know nothing about them. The most distinctive feature and the easiest to spot is their fabulous, golden coat. However they have many skills and are highly intelligent. This makes them excellent for many complicated tasks such as autist dogs or even narcotics detection.
In fact their coat color can range from a faintly yellow glow to a rich gold but also reddish brown. They actually have a double coat, yet even so are fairly easy to groom. They don’t require too much brushing since they are average shedders and the beauty of their coat is a marvel to behold.
I keep mentioning the coat because it has the special ability to reject water. In a sense they are waterproof. And this bring me to their most popular job – hunting. Well, right now their most popular job is probably being a pet, but you know what I mean. They will win your heart one way or the other.
Golden Retrievers are probably the best water hunting dogs in the world. They have excellent water endurance thanks to their coat, they love to swim and are very good at it because of their webbed feet. Their staunch perseverance and limitless energy enables them to stay active for long periods of time.
Their special hunting skill is retrieving water game. They have strong jaws with teeth that meet in a scissors bite. The breed is also large in size and well build so they can carry even semi-large game. They are also decent land hunting dogs because of their strength and limitless energy.
Golden Retriever temperament
The first thing you love about a Golden Retriever is how friendly he really is. Even if you’re a stranger to him he is much more likely to befriend you rather than attack you. They love family, kids, pets, strangers, you name it. These dogs love to mimick your lifestyle while adding happiness and energy to it.
They have a really friendly and playful demeanor and are known to lack guarding or territorial instincts. As such they make poor guard dogs though they do their job as watch dogs by virtue of a loud bark whenever strangers approach the yard. They are sociable dogs, they’re not afraid of people and are entertaining to watch and play with.
Yard or apartment for a Golden Retriever
Speaking of a yard, they are very comfortable in a mid-sized yard but an apartment is not troublesome either. Thing is, either way, they still need to get out to satisfy their migration instinct so as long as you keep them well exercised and walked there’s no reason for them to be unhappy.
Keep in mind that they will start to dig holes, scratch walls and do all sorts of harmful activities if left alone for too long or if their energy isn’t exhausted with exercises. They love affection and spending time with their family, if they lack that something will go wrong.
But there shouldn’t be any reason for them to lack their necessary exercise and attention since they are highly intelligent and learn new tricks quickly. They are a joy to play with and they will easily keep you entertained. This is time well spent. Not only will the dog learn to obey you, you also strengthen the bond between you and him when training. You also reinforce your position as a pack leader and so on. This is an instrumental activity in the well-being of your dog.
Golden Retrievers are great dogs, intelligent and friendly, easy to train and they don’t require too much maintenance. Like many types of dogs if they are overfed and lack activity they are prone to obesity. But their demeanor makes it impossible to ignore them and, if you know a thing or two about what they need, you’ll see it’s a joy rather than a curse to take care of them.
